My chihuahua is about 9 weeks old (male) and I got him last Wednesday. We got him from a place where he was allowed to go pee anywhere and everywhere so I'm having a bit of a problem potty training and keeping him quiet.
I will try to keep him awake for the most part during the day, then I put him to bed around 9:30/10:00 so he will sleep all night until at least 7:30am. The last 2 nights Buster (pup's name) has been screeeeaming and yelping like he's hurt, sometimes for 2 hours straight. The only way he will be quiet is if he has a blanket. I refuse to give him a blanket now b.c. he pee's on it instead of on his training pads.
Is there any way I can get him to be hush at night? Also, any ideas on how to keep him from peeing on my carpet half the time instead of on the pads?
Thanks!!
PS I put a blanket over his cage at night, and had tried putting the radio on and leaving a ticking clock near his bed for relaxation...doesn't seem to work very well!!
Chihuahua training problem, help?!?
Nine and a half hours is a long long time to expect a puppy to hold his business and that is why he is probably crying so much! No dog, even a full grown one should be expected to go that long without having an accident. A 9 week old puppy will go very often and you have to take him outside or where ever you want for him to go as soon as he wakes up or is looking around as if he is looking for a place to go. Please don't be harsh with him for making a mistake with that kind of time frame being in a crate and not able to get out and do his business. All the best.
Reply:The best way to potty train your dog is lots and lots of visits outside to do his duty. And praise and more praise and even a treat maybe when he does pee outside and he will.
I took my shihzu outside every two hours when she was 8 weeks old, besides having puppy pads by the door ONLY.
By following this routine...and it was not easy...she was trained in less than two weeks. Only two accidents since...she is three years old. But I had the time, I work from home. Not everyone has that advantage.
There is a spray..you can use on his blanket that will make him not want to pee on it. I do not know how effective it is, however.
Praise Praise Praise and Consistency is the best training...
Punishment dogs do not understand. But a stern voice - DURING and only when CAUGHT in a naughty act - works to teach them...that is unacceptable.
Soft calm praising voice to teach
caught in act of doing something wrong...a stern voice.
Good Luck
Reply:Since your puppy is very young and has no muscle, you have to provide him with a bed to help keep his body warm.
Also, puppies need a lot of rest and sleep and if you are keeping him up that long, you will have a cranky puppy. They need to sleep about 75% of the day and night.

Reply:chi pups aren't expected to grasp potty training unitll about 10-12 weeks... i wouldn't start to worry yet... are you locking the dor on the crate? if not, that could be your problem... he has an OPTION of being in the crate and not a command... dogs at that age should be crated at all times unless being played with, eating, or going potty. they are den animals and have to associate that crate as their den.. they won't potty where they take up as their den... also, as far as the crying that is normal, however you have to make the choice on what you don't like more , washing the blanket every day, or 2 hours of crying a night... a dog is like a child , you will have to make sacrifices... don't expect to have your dog trained in a week or even 2, it is a long process.. also never spank your dog for going potty on the carpet... they are much like children in the fact that what they hear is not "its bad you went potty on the carpet" its " I saw that so hide better next time!" i have trained MANY chis over the years, and once you realize that you are traning yourself to watch for signs and be consistant, and not training your dog to pee on command, it goes alot faster!! congrats on the pup!!!
