I want to start potty training my 2 year old.?

I want to start potty training my 2 year old, he sits on the toliet and just plays with the toliet paper, he understands when he poops and pee but does not tell us fast enough to take him to the bathroom. Well my question is, people have told me not to buy those pull ups b/c they are like diapers, is that true? My friend bought him some training pants but if he poops in those, I am not washing them. LOL So what do I do? Also, which do you like better Huggies Cool Alert Pull Ups, or Pampers. Please help?

I want to start potty training my 2 year old.?
For my son, I went straight from diapers to cotton underwear. He had a few accidents in his tighty whiteys so I bought some spiderman underwear and told him to keep spiderman clean. He tried so hard the accidents stopped.

I am a believer of standing to pee for boys because I think it helps them gain control of their bladder. We used a stool for the toilet that he loves http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Child-Corpor...

and I think him being comfortable is a big part of progress.

Hope this helps!
Reply:I tried putting underwear on my daughter and it didnt work...i think if they know they have something on then they dont have to go to the toilet when they go to the bathroom. instead, i just let my daughter run around naked one day and told her no more diapers so if she had to go then she better go to the toilet! it worked for us...
Reply:Well we tried that too. But he wasnt ready - now he is three and potty trained for peeing but still poops in his pants. Patience is the key. We saw no difference in any of the pull ups they all worked - if the child tells you thats great but its not because of the kind of pull up he wears.
Reply:I liked the pull-ups that had the layer in them to let the child know they are wet, not totally absorbent like diapers! DONT go back %26amp; forth from pull-ups/diapers to undies, that will only confuse the matter! I honstly dont remember what brand they were as my younngest is now 5. But with my oldest (now 15) we put a gumball machine on the back of the toilet everytime he went potty he got a piece of gum, it worked great for him!! My 5 yr old was and can be very naughty, he would just climb up and get the gum anytime he wanted some-obviously it didnt work so well for him! lolAlso sometimes it might help if you move the potty chair to the room you spend the most time in until they can detect it earlier and know where to go=D
Reply:It is great that he is sitting on the potty already. If you can try to figure out when he is going, you can be a little bit more aggressive and sit him on the potty when you think he may have to go, not just when he wants to sit or after he goes.

The training pants are very much like diapers. The biggest difference is that they are made to be pulled down like underwear. My favorite brand is Huggies, but they are my favorite for everything (plus they have the better coupons.)

Also, or some kids, it is best not to rush training. If you do, you get stressed, and he'll get stressed and there is a higher chance of accidents or relapse. (My first child started potty training at a young two and was still using nighttime diapers and having occasional accidents at 3.) As nice as it is to not have to deal with diapers anymore, they are way better than ton of laundry and cleaning up after accidents. Right now my 2 year old twins are using the potty occasionally, but I've decided not to really push for being potty trained until they are 3.
Reply:Just remember he is a boy and boys are harder to train then girls. My son was potty trained off and on between 2 and 3. We tried the pull-ups but it didn't make him uncomfortable enough and was just like a diaper. I sucked it up and took them away. We went to the store and had him pick out a couple packs of underwear. When he had an accident we cleaned him up and put the dirty underwear in a bag and had him put them in the trash. He was so dissapointed to loose his favorite underwear he picked and that's when he really learned how to hold it. When he had to go to daycare or we had to go out we would put the Pull-Ups on over the underwear so it still felt the same if he had an acccident and he still had to throw his undies away. This is what we did and it worked within a week or so. Now, on your end you have to weigh the facts that 1) Your going to have to commit to cleaning it up when he has an accident. 2) Your going to spend some money on underwear. 3) Your going to be washing his other clothes he has on alot. 4) You have to be consistant!! Good Luck!!
Reply:My daughter is 20 months old and refuses to wear diapers and showing signs of ready to potty train as well. She will wear Pampers Easy Ups no problem which works great for us since yes they are like diapers but not nearly as bulky which is why I think my daughter prefers them to regular diapers. A friend of mine who is a nanny suggested when we begin truly training to use the Feel and Learn ones because it helps to give the child a better understanding of timing/when they feel they need to go. She watches over three girls, two who used the Feel and Learns and had success with them. They're still not 100% trained (meaning they wet the bed at night) so they use pull ups at night. Her experience with Huggies vs Pampers is that Pampers Easy Ups (overnight) don't leak like Huggies Pull-Ups did. When I told her pretty much the same thing, I don't want my daughter to be confused thinking its ok to potty in big girl pants she said you only use them for a certain amount of time until they fully understand when they need to go, then you cold turkey the pull ups/diapers and when they wet themselve in underwear, they don't like the mess and THAT'S what really does it! Of course it varies from kid to kid as well. Best of luck!
Reply:I LOVE Brandie's answer!! I've never heard of that method, but it sounds like a good one to try. I'm almost ready to potty train my daughter and have lots of friends with boys. So, I will definitely share this great advice!! Whatever you do its important to be patient and consistent!!! Good luck and before you know it he'll be trained...hurrah!
Reply:I used the pull ups on my son and told him they were his new big boy pants and the better he gets in not doing anything in them--then he gets the real bib boy pants--it worked on him!! Practice, Patience, Practice, Patience!!!!!!!
