Any tips on training a 12 wk old puppy that is deaf?

Can't hear you, if you tell her to hush, she continues to bark, shocking her seems too harsh, useing hand signs with her, one for sit, one lay down and she has no down but still has trouble with barking. I have to take her everywhere b/c she will just cry not stop if I leave her behind.

Hold her mouth shut when she is barking exisivley. At the same time give a hand command.

The dog will learn that the hand command means to be quiet.

Good luck!
Reply:Its time for a hand signal for NO
Reply:When she barks, gently hold her muzzle shut and wag your finger at her. She will eventually understand.
Reply:poor wee pup, but id agree that it has to be holding the muzzle and indicating. as for the leaving her alone. try and put a soft toy with an old alarm clock, that ticks , beside her at night. the ticking reminds her of her mums heartbeat and so will the fluffy toy.

Reply:WOW - with lots of work and patience, you will have to get her to associate a hand signal with being quiet, and short of lightly holding her mouth as mentioned I really don't have a suggestion. Because the hand sign alone may cause her to associate that sign with barking.... what a tough Q... if you can not manage to do it on your own, you may wish to try an obediance class for deaf pups.... they would better understand and be better able to train him.

I wish you and your pooch the very best =)

This has a link for making her a vibrating collar! %26gt; http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/lib-prob.h...
Reply:Hearing Aids maybe.
Reply:You could try an electronic collar.

Some of them have a vibrate feature on them. Where you can push the button and instead of a shock the thing vibrates on the dogs neck to get thier attention.

Or use the lowest setting on the shock collar.

If you put it on your own arm and hit the button you will find it does not really hurt but gets your attention right now.

For a deaf dog this is the safest way to start training as you can stop them if something is going to hurt them.

As they get older and learn to look at you for thier directions you can use the collar less.

I have a friend who has adeaf cattle dog and it is one ofthebest trained dogs I have ever seen and this is how she started this dog.

Good luck and keep working on it.
