I might worry that your pup is afraid of pottying in front of you. Make sure you catch him going as often as possible and smile and praise him for going. Let him know you love it (at least outside). Be careful about any scolding or correction until he feels good about pottying in front of you.

If you are able to devote a couple of long days, I would stop with the crate and carry him with you everywhere. The technique is called the puppy airlift and it has helped me a bunch with my puppy. Don't put him on the ground except in his potty area. It may take a while of going out every half hour, but eventually he will potty and you can tell him how great he is.

About the crate- you could try removing the blanket- some pups use it for the diaper effect. A couple of more disgusting accidents might require you to wash him instead of just the blankets but it might also permanently change his mind about pooping in his crate.

I am also housebreaking a small male puppy- chihuahua. I found a really cool website that is all about housebreaking and now I think I'm an expert :) You may want to check it out for yourself, though, in case I got any of it wrong. Here is a link to the getting started page that links to "The Puppy Airlift" and Crate Training:

Reply:Wait, so how big is the crate? And do you have the potty pad IN the crate?

The potty pad SMELLS like a potty. It encourages them to go. The crate should be just large enough to turn around and stand up in. Anything larger is too large. When you take him out, and he does not go, how long is it before he goes in his kennel?

Edit: Take the potty pad out. That's one of your problems. Follow the video to the letter. You are right about the praising. Make a fool of yourself showing your dog how happy you are. The crate needs to be just big enough for your dog to be comfortable, and no more.

What you said about taking them back out ten minutes later is right. You just have to take out the variable that is making him think it is proper to go potty in his kennel. The size and the potty pad.

Potty pads have pheromones in them that make the dog want to potty on them. They are used only for dogs to potty on, that will be going in the rest of their lives. You now will have to re-train your dog a bit from using the pad in the kennel. I would suggest cleaning the kennel out with an enzyme cleaner, such as Natures Miracle.

Reply:you cannot train a puppy in a crate. he is a baby. unless you are home, you cannot ever train him.
Reply:crate training a puppy you need alot of patience. As for the using the bathroom in there poor thing cant help it because it can only hold it for so long being he is so young. Leaving a potty pad in there is also not helping because he smelling the scent to which he thinks hmmm i guess its okay to do it in here. I would say leaving a potty pad in there is making him confused being he doesnt have the whole going outside thing down pack. I would suggest removing the potty pad and take him on a regular schedule for outside trips to use the bathroom and have alot of patience your pup will catch on sooner or later. Good Luck
Reply:Have you tried taking the poop outside where you want him to go and showing him?
