Question about crate/potty training?

I've got a 1 1/2 year old dog who has been taught to use the bathroom on the paper inside. We want to change that now, and we bought him a crate to help with it. Well, he started to poop inside and I caught him and said, "Noooo!" "That's bad!" Just kinda said it real loud to hope he sorta gets the hint that he isn't supposed to do that. So, in the middle of him going, I quickly grabbed his collar, and brought him right outside. Well, he was just as happy as can be to go outside, and when we got out there he only peed. I praised him for that, but my question is this: If the dog goes inside, and you immediately take him out to "show him he's supposed to go outside and do that" then will the dog not see it as a reward? B/c he was just so happy and excited to go outside. So wouldn't he see it as, "I go on the floor, and I get to go outside. Yay!". Wouldn't they see it as a reward, even if you did fuss him while he was doing it inside? B/c he seemed to have forgotten about the fuss I made.

Question about crate/potty training?
First thing you have to do with a dog is us the same dry food. Dry food is the best because it cleans there teeth and it is not full of water. Until house broke, the dog should only be feed once a day at the same time every day. Walk the dog after you feed it. And I mean walk do not just stand there. Then walk him again a half hour after that. You should walk him as many times a day as you can until house broke. Walking helps it pass the food. Walk it in the same place every day. When they smell there own potty it makes them have to go. When the dog goes in the house, clean it up with vinegar. This does 2 things kills the smell+vinegar has a urine bass smell and the dog thinks you r marking this as your turf. When the dog goes in the house put the potty outside where you want it to go. Remember smelling his potty makes him want to go. So no potty smell in the house but lots of potty smell outside. You should have a pin or create just big enough for him to lie down. Most dog will not potty where they lay. Do not put anything in the pin that will soak up pee. When you are not watching your dog, he should be in the pin. If he goes in the house, you should catch him in the act and grab him and yell no then take him outside. Clean it up and take the potty outside. So to rap this up. Walk him as much as you can tell him good boy when he goes outside. When your not watching him keep him it the pin. When he goes inside tell him bad boy and take him outside..
Reply:The only suggestion I can make is that you treat him as though he were a puppy. Take him out regularly. And when he goes outside, give him treats. But, you have to give him more than just a pee break. He needs the chance to sniff around and whatever then he'll realize "oh! I have to poo!" And he'll go. Watch for signs, they start pacing, sniffing the floor, acting all anxious. Sometimes he might even follow you around gawking at you as if to say "hello! i have to go out!!!" If he is taught now to go on paper then you need to slowly move that paper towards the door. And eventually outside...then get rid of it all together. He needs to see that the paper is where he goes, but now the paper goes outside....so HEY! I go outside!!!! Know what I mean? Be persistent and clean up any accidents as soon as possible. I heard that rubbing his nose in it actually make them think that pooing was bad, they don't associate the bad behavior as going on the floor, but just going was bad...so stay away from disciplining Fido for accidents. Just immediately take him outside. If you start taking him out every 2 hours he'll get the idea that he can hold it for when he goes out. It takes a little while, especially since he's already trained to go on paper. Good luck!
Reply:maybe you should take him out in the morning and in the after noon and or when ever you feed him because they will sometimes they will forget.
Reply:Yep, that's why it's good to crate train to start with if the goal is for him to go outside in the long run. This is a helpful website on crate training that should help you a lot. You basically will have to restart housebreaking from scratch since he's confused now about what's expected of him.

Reply:Maybe. But try putting some newspapers outside. Then bring him out often so he can get the idea. Praise him when he goes outside.
Reply:You want to prevent them from going inside and then praise them for going outside. If there is an accident, you have to catch them in the act and bring them outside. If your dog thinks that going outside is a reward for pooping inside, you need to concentrate on taking him outside at the right time. Since he is 1.5 years old, you should know when he needs to relieve himself. He isn't a puppy, so he doesn't need to go every hour or anything. Pay attention to his usual schedule of going to the bathroom and make sure you watch him like a hawk and take him outside if he starts to sniff around and act suspicious.

About the crate -- he pooped in the crate? Make sure the crate is not too big for him. If he can poop in one side and still lay down in the other side, it is too big for him. If he only has enough space to lay down comfortably, most dogs will not poop/pee in their crate. They don't want to lay in it. So, make sure it's the right size crate.
